Here I am... ringing in the New Year with my sistas!
I hope you had a fun New Years Eve... you know, enjoying Mariah Carey's performance and hanging out with friends... and I hope you were able to kick off 2017 with love and laughter.
I know what you are thinking. You are thinking this is going to be a post all about resolutions and making changes and all that wonderful, traditional, stuff. I do love to talk about plans and dreams and hopes for a new year, but I am going to side step that topic just a little.
Like anyone I am ready for a new start, a fresh start, and am happily making lists and goals and evaluations of where I want to be one year from now (and of course finding the perfect 2017 planner + calendar!). You see, this is the fun and exciting part. Making the plans, writing down the dreams of all of the change that we are intending to make happen. This is the part I love! However, there comes a time during the year when we aren't as hopeful. We aren't as motivated. We aren't as driven to accomplish change. Why? Well, simply put, it gets hard.
I think we (modern society) over-glorify the idea of starting things. We encourage each other to do what's hard, do what is a little scary, to take risks, and to be brave. Which we should, because stepping out into the new and the unknown is difficult. It really is. However, I would propose today that sticking with something that you have already started in your life is much, much more difficult.
It seems to me that being consistent, faithful, and passionate can be a major struggle. We get excited about the idea of something new. Sure it can be scary, but the excitement of something new can help us bypass a lot of that fear. So starting a new business, hobby, goals, or some other venture can be exciting, but there comes a time when that excitement wears off... and usually that happens when there is some push back coming at us. It happens when the real work sets in. We may kick off the year with a bang, going hard at all of the resolutions we have made, but when it gets down to sticking with...
Sticking to that fitness goal when we aren't seeing the results we want.
Sticking to the budget that will set us up for financial freedom when it seems like it will take forever.
Sticking to that Bible reading plan when we feel like we still aren't getting it right.
When our expectations of change aren't met, we start second guessing ourselves.
"Maybe this wasn't such a great idea."
"Maybe I should quit before I have too much invested."
"This is just too hard."
We start singing quite a different tune. It is the age-old idea that we, for some reason, believe only applied to kids. Kids say they want to take gymnastics.... after a few months it is karate.... then swimming lessons to become an Olympic swimmer... then music lessons to become the next superstar.... then... it is something else. Kids are not the only ones who do this. Grown ups do it too. All the time. So let's change that.
I would like to propose we stop putting so much emphasis on someone's courage to start something / do something new, but rather on their courage to stick with it. Let's congratulate their zeal, but let's celebrate the dedication of someone who doesn't give up... even when others would. Because that is real bravery. Riding into undiscovered territory may be scary, but riding out the storms is too.
As Winston Churchill said, "Never. Never. Never give up."
I couldn't say it any better myself.
Before I close out for today I want to tell you about this super fun challenge we are going to be taking on for the month of January, kicking off 2017. It is the "A Thing A Day" Challenge. And that is exactly what it is. A challenge for each day. If you can't complete each prompt on the assigned day, no worries! Just do the ones you can, and if you have to do them out of order, no big deal.
Don't be scared off by the word challenge. But some times doing things that pull us out of our daily routine can be a challenge! But that is the whole purpose of this, to get out of our daily grind, and do something fun or new or adventurous or generous or relational. It is a little reminder to LIVE IT UP in 2017. Do something you have never done. Invest in relationships. Make memories. Look at nature. Live healthy. Do new things.
We would love for you to join us!
